Few words about the show:
Bartosz Szydłowski directed “Conformist 2029” after the premieres of “The Cruise” based on Marek Piwowski and Janusz Głowacki’s film and on Krzysztof Kieślowski’s “Przypadek”. He then brought back the memories of the temptations of conformism in the reality of the People’s Republic, albeit not without increasingly realistic
references to our contemporary times.
In the adaptation of Moravia’s novel, he became fascinated by the protagonist standing on the crossroads, at a time of a radical historical turn, when you need to become a partisan of one of the parties in the political controversy dividing the society. Marcel Klerykoski is disturbed by lack of intimate, personal, and family
fulfilment. No longer ready to carry the burden of loneliness, he’d rather act in a politically uniform mass, something
known from the days of Italian fascism that, like contemporary populism, fell back on the needs of “a simple man”, and called for pride in the history of the country, boosting up the morale, and disregard for the liberal elites.
Klerykoski acts along the lines known for centuries as “the treason of the clerks”: instead of remaining a free man, open to the world, that student of Professor Quadri chooses conformism. He gives
up the dream of freedom, development, and his life’s passions. He yields to the fear of chaos that may have its price yet also guarantees freedom. Professor Quadri, an émigré who found a refuge from a populist regime in Paris, is played by Krzysztof Globisz, who, after an illness, returned to the stage of the Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in the premiere of the “Wieloryb The Globe”, designed for the Divine Comedy in 2016. This time Globisz
delivers the monologue of the steadfast intellectual based on a poem by Stanisław Barańczak: a poet, translator, and resistance activist from the time of communism, who was forced by the regime into emigration.
